Remember when you were a kid and you had those big family gatherings at your grandparents on one or both sides of your family? Usually when kids are brought up this way it gives them a strong sense of family and it is just commonplace to stay close to one another. Unfortunately, things change as you grow up. The families grow up and sometimes they grow apart. It is easy to lose track of aunts and uncles, cousins, and sometimes even your grandparents and parents. This happens when people grow up and start their own lives. Sometimes you have to move far away because of where you work or who you marry and eventually you might begin to miss those close ties you used to have with your favorite cousin.
When life gets so busy, it might be difficult to keep track of your own kids when you work all of the time and they are in school. Your immediate family can take up all of your time and planning trips or even making phone calls to more distant relatives can be something you always mean to do, but just never seem to get around too. It used to be that making long distance phone calls was too expensive to do unless it was necessary, so that is why a lot of people lost touch. Letter writing took time and it was one of those things that you never got around to.
Today, most families have their long distance calls for one rate and it is so much cheaper to call as many people as you like. Still, it can be hard to find the time to call people and just sit and talk about old times. Planning trips to see one another can be difficult because of conflicting schedules and of course, finances. You might have to find the money to visit your parents, but a cousin or uncle can usually wait.
What you should do is learn to use your computer for keeping in contact. A lot of couples who live far apart and are in love do this for a time. When you have the Internet installed on your computer, you have a whole world of opportunity to contact distant relatives and friends you hardly ever get to see or talk to, even if some of them live out of the country. Instant messaging, emailing, and having a web cam are great features you can use with the Internet. When both parties have a web cam, you can see each other even if you are on opposite sides of the world. It can make you feel so good to get back in contact with those you might not have seen in years. Most people have computers in their homes these days and when families start exchanging email addresses it makes reunions possible anytime you have a few minutes to spare.
