Many will understand the importance of adequate food packaging in supermarkets or grocery shops, whereby the food is presented in a sealed and hygienic, often air tight package. This keeps the food fresh and clean, preventing any possibilities of it being contaminated by any airborne particles that will affect the quality of the product and potentially put the customer off from buying it. Furthermore, the customer will feel that this product is not safe to buy and could be contaminated. It is always important for food industry experts to keep all of their products in good condition and being sure to check all items upon delivery so as not to display something where the seal has been broken. Legally a product with a damaged seal should not be placed on the shelves for display, but should be replaced immediately with a sealed package. The broken package should be discarded immediately as it is deemed no longer safe for consumption. Food packaging is a very important and complicated industry, as there are many different types of films and protective covers that are only specific to certain food types. Vacuum packed products are good for keeping moisture in the package for things like meat products or cheeses. Any contact with oxygen may cause the meat to turn o discolour, making it unsuitable for selling. Other foods that are dry such as crisps or biscuits will most certainly need to be sealed tightly as they cannot have contact with any amount of moisture. This will cause the products to go soggy and inedible. Packaging in general is designed to keep the food fresh right up until its sell by date. If the food starts to turn or go mouldy before the expiry date then the result will be a lack of interest from the consumer. However, it is not just the one customer you will risk losing, but another nine more as that same customer will have informed others about what they have found. A risk of this extent is not worth taking, especially if the consequences could be a shut down of your establishment or being responsible for causing some health problems. Often a product can look fine however, if a puncture in the packaging or broken seal is overlooked, very often the consumer will not have taken notice of it and purchased the product anyway. They find that they will end up suffering from an ailment of some sort which will very quickly connect the cause to the food that they have eaten. It is vital in this case to avoid potential risks and to be on top of the food packaging. The right packaging for the food is always important as not all protective films are designed in the same way and do not keep all foods protected. For example films used to protect meat would not be suitable for fruits or dry foods. The protection of food will enable more customer loyalty and increase your reputation of being an honest and trustworthy establishment.
